DAG HAMMARSKJÖLD`S BACKÅKRA OPEN AGAIN!

On March 28 Dag Hammarskjöld’s home Backåkra was formally re-opened after its much-needed renovation. Backåkra will now be open again as a museum and as a forum for meetings in the spirit of Dag Hammarskjöld. The museum will be open to the public as of 30 March, 2018. . 

THE RE-OPENING

A beautiful re-inauguration was held in white tents with a view over the snow-clad heath outside. The Chair of the Dag Hammarskjöld’s Backåkra Foundation, Peder Hammarskiöld, spoke about the vision for Backåkra as a place for dialogue and inspiration, and a modern museum which reflects Dag Hammarskjöld’s role as Secretary-General of the United Nations, but also as a man of culture and a lover of nature.

Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallström emphasized the continued relevance in today’s world of Hammarskjöld’s pioneering work to strengthen the role of the UN in conflict prevention. The ceremony also included a speech by the Chair of the Swedish Tourist Association (STF), who highlighted how the creation of the new Foundation had made it possible to save Backåkra for future generations, working in the spirit of Hammarskjöld. Klas Östergren, a member of the Swedish Academy, read passages from Hammarskjöld’s Markings. The Swedish musicians Nils Landgren and Lars Nilsson performed a musical tribute. The guests at the re-inauguration were able to view the new exhibition, including its interactive platforms, and to see Dag Hammarskjöld’s own art, books and furniture in the renovated house.
